Future Of Web Languages

from: mark.birbeck 4 months ago

This talk was given by Mark Birbeck at 'Kings of Code', in Amsterdam on May 27th, 2008.

The W3C has a number of exciting new languages in development, from XForms for user interface definition, to RDFa and @role for defining semantics. These languages are usually regarded as something to be implemented natively by browsers, but this presentation shows examples of how they can also provide a rich source of 'hooks' onto which to attach 'unobtrusive javascript'.

XForms for Metadata creation

from: eby 5 months ago

As distributing metadata creation to authors, catalogers and other system users who may or may not have an understanding of XML becomes more and more important it has become imperative to develop reliable methods for creating and editing XML documents. This presentation will focus on the two MODS editors developed by UVM and Brown Universities and introduce the XForms technology as a means for digital libraries to create and manage complex metadata.

Applications of XML Pipelines

from: ebruchez 2 years ago

The XProc XML pipeline language is well on its way to be standardized at W3C. But, exactly, what are XML pipelines good for? And how do they work in practice?

In this talk, we attempt to answer these questions by presenting use cases for XML pipelines implemented with XPL, a close cousin of XProc. We show in particular how XML pipelines fill a niche in the constantly evolving web applications ecosystem. Can XML pipelines help deal with multiple web browsers? With REST services? With the plethora of syndication formats such as RSS and Atom? With Ajax? We suggest that the answer is yes in all these cases.

We also show how XML pipelines can play a particularly interesting role when used in conjunction with XForms.
